Ava’s song was about being so in love that it makes you sick. I thought that was such a fun, whimsical, and hilarious take on love, so I pitched a literal interpretation: she’s so in love that it literally makes her ill and she gets hospitalized for it. In a dreamy version of a patient room, of course: I worked with our PD Sharon Vion (now Sharon Reiss) on drawing fantastical themes. I wanted to reflect and glamorize Ava’s feelings and make the set feel like a fairy tale tower with her as its modern Rapunzel, waiting for her knight in shining armor. As the audience, we get to peek into her brain through the framing visual of a giant heart. I wanted to strike a balance between pop fun and warmth, so we tied up the story with the help of a little…kidnapping.
